Snow Range 760m to 1995m, Home of the mighty Hahnenkamm race, the medieval town of Kitzbuhel is amongst the most architecturally beautiful towns in the Alps. Offering a wide range of skiing and other winter activities during the day, Kitzbuhel’s pastel-painted houses and cobbled streets give a most exquisite back drop to some lively apres-ski and nightlife.

Kitzbuhel Guide

The Hahnenkamm is accessed via gondola from the centre of Kitzbuhel and has good snow conditions, a variety of challenging terrains and of course between 21st – 23rd January hosts one of the most prestigious races in the FIS World Cup calendar. During this time the town is a blaze of colourful atmosphere, making it one of Austria’s most popular resorts.

Skiing

Access to the Hahnenkamm ski area is via gondola from the centre of town. This is linked to a network of 55 gondolas, chair and drag lifts. The resort offers a total of 168kms of piste totalling 59 runs:

  • 21 Beginner
  • 25 intermediate
  • 13 Difficult

The longest of the runs is the 6.8km Pengelstein. In addition there is great off-piste and 45km of cross country skiing.

Tuition

There is anything from 150 to 300 fully qualified instructors available. Tuition usually takes place between the hours of 10.00 and 12.00am in the morning and 1.30 and 3.30pm in the afternoon. Supervised lunch is available for the younger members of the party for around 9 euros a day. There is the Crystal Pepi Penguin Club for children from 6 months to 4 years inclusive which operates from the centre of town, pre-booking is essential.

Beginner’s packages are available including, 6 days standard equipment hire and a free helmet for children. Lift pass is not included in the package:

Accommodation

As would be expected of a town that host such a prestigious event as the Hahnenkamm, a choice of accommodation in Kitzbuhel is not a problem.

Hotel Erika, the most famous accommodation in Kitzbuhel, is an icon of the town centre. Built in Art Nouveau style in the late 19th century, its timeless sophistication coupled with all modern facilities completed to the highest standard, make it a must for that luxury stay or maybe just for an afternoon tea visit. In contrast to the 14th century castle of Austrian nobles that is now Hotel Schloss, Lebenberg is slightly out of town – here it commands fabulous vistas of the Kitzbuhel area. Recently refurbished, it offers a full range of modern facilities and beautifully appointed rooms.

Not surprisingly there are a large number of these premier grade hotels, including the modern Tirolean style Hotel Jagerwirt with its superb leisure facilities. There is also the stunning Hotel Schwarzer Alder in the heart of Kitzbuhel that boasts the most ‘up and coming gourmet restaurant’ in town. The Hotel Tiefenbrunner, in the midst of all the best shops and restaurants of Kitzbuhel, has been run by the family for over 200 years and in addition to this there is the Sporthotel Reisch which is brimming with wellness activities, has a very friendly atmosphere and has fine cuisine on offer.

The Best Western Premier quality of Hotel Kaiserhof speaks for itself, with the added attraction of only 1 minutes walk to the Hahnenkamm Gondola and within a stone’s throw of the town centre – it is perfect if you do not want to walk great distances to get anywhere. Hotel Astoria, by contrast, is on the outskirts of town and benefits from magnificent views of the mountains. Well renowned for its restaurant, it is beautifully appointed in a modern yet traditional alpine style.

There is a host of other accommodation in the 3.5 and 3 star quality range, the most notable of which is Hotel Bruggerhof. Located next to Lake Schwarzsee, the surroundings are truly magical.

Nightlife and Other Activities

Kitzbuhel nightlife is lively yet sophisticated amid the breathtaking architecture of the town. Other activities include a 25m indoor pool and large fun-pool, outdoor skating rink and sleigh rides. The resort also has a range of fine shopping, a post office, bank and supermarket. However Kitzbuel’s crowning glory is its hosting of the Hahnenkamm Alpine Downhill.

Ski Kitzbuhel and experience on of Austria’s most fashionable but historic resorts. It enjoys a massive and exciting ski circuit with over 170 kilometres of piste spread over two mountains, The Kitzbuheler Horn and The Hahnenkamm, most famous for the mens downhill ski race. So regardless of your age or ability, skiing and snowboarding in Kitzbuhel will suit everyone.

Skiing up to 2000 metres above sea level, the snow here is virtually guaranteed and 91% of the runs are covered with snow cannons so you should never have difficulty finding somewhere to ski, even at end of season. Kitzbuhel is amazing for groups of skiers and boarders with over100 different wide cruisy runs to experience.

Beginners will like the convenience of the nursery slopes being just at the bottom of the Hahnenkamm and the Red Devils ski school offers all levels of tuition, with a crèche and Kindergarten too, makes it perfect for families too.

Intermediates have a huge choice of blues and reds, wide open slopes in the Kitzbueler Horn and the scenic tree lined runs on the Pass Thurn. The extensive lift system is second to none and encompasses the whole area of both mountains giving you an endless choice of where to go next.

The ultimate challenge for advanced is the “Strief” with its vertical drop which even ski racers fear, and the off piste is excellent and varied.

Boarders are in their element here, the wide cruisy runs, the 22 drag lifts and choice of two board parks and half pipes, makes Kitzbuhel a perfect choice for all.

The historic town of Kitzbuhel has something for everyone, with its cobbled streets, traditional buildings, makes it a beautiful place to stay. Inside the medieval walls there are unlimited shopping opportunities, numerous bars and cafés and restaurants, the evenings just come alive with many live music bars and discos coming into their own. For the non skiers there is sleigh rides, ice skating, tobogganing, swimming, horse riding, casino and a sports centre.

Prices in Kitzbuhel are varied, but a typical week half board will start around £500.
